UPDATE (9/19/2009) - Darkroom Premium (v.2.3) has finally been approved by Apple and it's available now in the iTunes Store. So update now! Darkroom Standard, on the other hand, is still awaiting approval from Apple.

Due to the number of support questions regarding Darkroom and OS 3.0 support in the past week, it seems many are still unaware of why Darkroom is not compatible with OS 3.0. Therefore, I have created this announcement for your use. We will to respond to everyone's general OS 3.0 support concerns via the comments, but if you want to address us privately, you can certainly do so by emailing us.

Here's the complete rundown of what's been happening:

Current versions of Darkroom and Darkroom Premium are NOT compatible with OS 3.0 resulting in the app crashing.

We have an OS 3.0 compatible version but Apple has repeatedly rejected it because we use a custom camera interface. They have approved it in the past, but have since stopped and claims we are using an undocumented API to achieve the interface. In other words, we are at a standstill with Apple.

If we strip it down to comply with Apple, Darkroom will be no different than default Camera app.

Other photo apps that uses a custom camera interface are also having the same problems with getting approved.

We have not been updated by Apple of any changes in developer guidelines that would result in this situation.

Additionally, this past weekend, we noticed Apple has approved a photo app that uses a custom camera interface, Real Cam LE. So, this could be a sign that Darkroom is in line for approval or Apple has some serious issues with their apps approval team, as many have suggested.

So, if the approval action for the photo app mentioned above is not flawed, you could still see Darkroom make a comeback to your iPhones. For now though, we've done as much as we could on our end and it's not resulting in any response from Apple. What we suggest is for you, our users, to contact Apple directly either by their iTunes feedback form or by phone and express your concerns about this matter.

We have cross post this announcement into the Stepcase blog. You may also choose to leave your comments there.

Thanks for the update guys... It's not right for Apple to block good apps from OS 3.0... if the built-in camera took good pics, there would be no need for Darkroom at all!

Any idea what kind of timeframe for a fix to be available?

I found out the hard way, on a 3 day canoe trip that my 'camera' did not work. The timer was my way of capturing group shots...very sad about the lack of support from Apple.

Question: I tried to roll back iPhone firmware to 2.2 via restore, but it did not work I still have 3.0. Is there anyway to go back to 2.2. The backup didn't even work with 3.0, as I now have to remember all my aps and manualy dl them.

My company wants me to go to a Blackberry...I am really tempted.

Thanks

@Phil, we have the fix, but the approval process depends on Apple. We've done all we can on our end, now it's just a waiting game.

@David Jackson, This coming from Apple customer support staff: it's not possible to downgrade iPhone 3.0 to an older
version.

Also, thanks to a Darkroom user who contacted Apple regarding our app and then letting us know how Apple is handling this issue. He got a reply from Apple and is quoted below:

"The Developer has submitted an update for the application that should make
it compatible with iPhone 3.0. You will need to wait for the update to be
released."

We are hoping this time is soon, but our update has been with them since May, so just more waiting.

Here's an update, more like an observation. We've noticed some camera/photography apps, the likes of CameraZoom and QuadCamera, being updated by Apple in the past week or so. Those apps also use the same custom camera interface like Darkroom and appears Apple is slowly approving these apps back in the App Store. And although Apple has yet to release our update, this does give us hope that Apple will soon approve Darkroom and other similar camera apps. *fingers crossed*

Between the time I spent with Apple concerning this and the time spent here. Im down quite a few bucks. Get out of the business if the objective is not providing for your customer base. Thats just bad business. I will not look to your company for Apps but excuses, neither of will get my money back. Grow some balls and work it out.

@scholmes: Please understand -- Technically there are no solutions to comply with Apple's policy changes while providing the same steady mode functionality we have on Darkroom. We have talked to Apple's App review and development support team and they also confessed technically there are no way we can do it their way and keep our core functions. Apple virtually left us with two options: Either strip-down all the functions of Darkroom or remove the app from the App Store. Both options are bad for customers. We'd rather spend more time and address customer's concerns to Apple so we can continue to offer Darkroom, rather than giving up.

@schlomes you fail to completely misunderstand the situation. There is no "complying" smart ass. Apple said they wont accept darkroom because it uses the camera with a custom interface. THAT IS DARKROOM! If you "comply" then that means you're not going to develop darkroom anymore. So understand the situation first before talking smack to these devs.

No Im not. Instead of coming in here talking smack like a child, try to understand the situation because you clearly don't understand.

Apple will NOT except Darkroom. There is NO complying. Darkroom is a custom UI for the camera. Apple is no longer accepting custom UIs for 3.0. Therefore Darkroom CANNOT exist. So, you CANNOT have the product.

If you think this is Stepcase's fault, then you clearly are either a child or someone with no sense of logic. Instead of complaining to Stepcase, complain to APPLE becauae stepcase CANNOT do anything at this point except get people to complain to Apple, because if enough people complain and Apple sees demand for this or other camera apps - then they will allow them.

If you want a refund go to Apple as I did.
You need to learn common courtesy and logic. Stepcase doesnt have to be on hands and knees for someone like you and your "think customer first" crap. if you had even a slight remote understandong of the situation you'd be saying that to Apple. NOT stepcase. Clearly you do not.

Immaturity, like you're displaying, is one of the sole reasons why companies and businesses don't offer better support. They don't want to deal with people like you, who have no respect, understanding, or regards for the company, its people, or the situtation/problem at hand. Pathetic.

(Teeter) I agree with you and I have complained to Apple in voice and in a letter earlier today. This is not about the dollar. I wish Stepcase had direct customer relations rather then this public forum. My business is with them rather then the kid with the run on sentences. One has to understand that as a consumer, I don't care about the inner works of the computer world. Phrases like 3.0's and UI's don't mean anything to me. I just want what I paid for. The unfortunate thing is the consumer is again in the middle.

Stepcase cannot do anything for you. The only thing that can be done is get a refund from Apple, complain to them, and get others to complain too. The product you paid for in the App Store will NOT work, and NEVER will work unless Apple allows Stepcase to fix the product.

There's not much we can report on in the progress of approval process of Darkroom and there's still no word from Apple. However, we did notice the Apple app review team has just approved an photo app that uses a custom camera interface this past weekend. This could mean one of two things. One, that it's a good sign Apple is slowly approving these photo apps and Darkroom is somewhere in the queue to get approved next OR it's just more proof that there is a problem with the Apple app store approval process. We're hoping for the best but will be calling out Apple app review team on this one and get back to you guys with an update if and when we hear back from them.

Make sure your OS current.

In the mobile world, newer is better. We suggest keeping your OS
current as it may provide system fixes that may resolve issues found in
our apps.

Restart your device.

Every once awhile, your iPhone or iPod might feel overworked and it too
will need a coffee break. Restart your iPhone and run the app again.
This will likely resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Download and reinstall our app

Ok, so your iPhone or iPod loves the daily grind and doesn’t need a
coffee break, that’s okay. What you can do is try to download and
reinstall the app in question.

Ask for help

So, your Stepcase app just doesn’t want to behave. Head over to our
support portal to browse app-related help topics and/or submit your
question. Be sure to include details.

A note about Jailbroken devices

So your iPhone or iPod is a running rebel, we’re cool with that and
we’ll try to help out, but if it’s caused by unsupported Apple
software, we’ll have to pass.
